As reported by USA Today, Ford is recalling more than 100,000 vehicles in the United States, after discovering a host of safety defects in electrical junction blocks, glass roofs, halfshafts and brakes in several models of vehicle. The auto manufacturer says that no deaths, injuries or accidents have been reported in connection to the recalls to date.
Ford announces 6 auto recalls
Late model (2012-2014) Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Police Interceptor sedans, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKT crossovers, Lincoln MKX crossovers and Edge crossovers make up the bulk of the Ford safety defect recall, with more than 92,000 vehicles affected. According to the manufacturer, the vehicles may roll without warning if they are parked without the benefit of the parking brake. In addition, a part of the axle known as the right-hand halfshaft is faulty and can disengage over time, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Individuals who have purchased vehicles with a defective halfshaft are to be notified by Ford by the third week of August, and are eligible for a free repair at their Ford dealer.
Other models that have been recalled by Ford include:
- 197 Ford Fiesta (2014) subcompacts. Ford indicates that fuel tanks were made without a key adhesive layer, putting them at higher risk for a leak and fire.
- 2,124 Ford Escape (2014) SUVs. Glass roofs were not properly cured and bonded, meaning they could leak and actually separate from the vehicle.
- 368 Transit Connect (2014). The manufacturer found that brake reservoir caps in particular models shipped to Puerto Rico are marked with labels that that don’t comply with U.S. labeling regulations.
- 635 F53 Motor home stripped chassis and F59 commercial stripped chassis (2014). Faulty brake calipers can cause a leak and subsequent loss of braking performance.
- 5,264 F59 Commercial stripped chassis (2011-2014). Affected vehicles have shown corrosion in the electrical junction block, putting vehicles at greater risk for loss of electrical power or a fire due to a short circuit.
2014 has been particularly rough for auto makers and owners alike, with more than 37.5 million cars recalled this year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Vehicles made by General Motors (GM) account for nearly two-thirds of all recalled autos (25.7 million), which were found to suffer major defects such as faulty ignition switches and defective seat-belt retractors.
Last year, a $17.4 million Ford recall settlement was paid to U.S. safety regulators, after it was found that the auto maker failed to act promptly in recalling Escape SUV vehicles due to unintended acceleration problems.
