What is Nexium?

Nexium and other PPIs are medications that treat heartburn. They reduce the amount of acid produced by stomach glands. PPIs are available over the counter and in prescription strength. They may be prescribed for:

  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • PUD (peptic ulcer disease)
  • Esophageal inflammation
  • Esophageal acid damage
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach and intestinal ulcers

For ulcers especially, Nexium and other PPIs are intended for short-term use; however, many people have been instructed to take these medications for the long-term, especially if they have been prescribed for prevention of ulcers and related problems.

In many of these cases, the consumer was not properly warned of the risks of taking the drug. Hundreds of these cases have been consolidated into federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) in New Jersey.
