Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used in the U.S. In fact, about 15 million Americans take prescription PPIs, while millions more purchase them over the counter. Although all medications carry the risk of side effects, PPIs have been linked to serious adverse events. At Eisbrouch Marsh, we are reviewing claims in which the manufacturer may have failed to warn of certain risks, resulting in serious injury to the consumer.
If you think you may have a defective drug claim related to one of these acid reflux medications, please call us for a free case evaluation. You can reach us in New Jersey at 201-342-5545, or in New York at 212-643-0044.
What is Nexium?
Nexium and other PPIs are medications that treat heartburn. They reduce the amount of acid produced by stomach glands. PPIs are available over the counter and in prescription strength. They may be prescribed for:
- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
- PUD (peptic ulcer disease)
- Esophageal inflammation
- Esophageal acid damage
- Stomach and intestinal ulcers
For ulcers especially, Nexium and other PPIs are intended for short-term use; however, many people have been instructed to take these medications for the long-term, especially if they have been prescribed for prevention of ulcers and related problems.
Nexium/PPI Claims Handled by our Lawyers
If you were taking a PPI and suffered a serious complication, particularly related to your kidneys, you may have a claim against the manufacturer. The attorneys at Eisbrouch Marsh are currently reviewing these claims. We are currently reviewing all claims, such as those related to:
- Kidney damage and renal failure
- Acute interstitial nephritis
- Stomach infections
- Heart attacks
A study involving clinical data for more than 2.9 million people found some correlation between PPIs and a higher risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack). They found the increased risk to be about 16 to 20 percent. A study published in 2016 found that PPI use is associated with a heightened risk of chronic kidney disease.
In many of these cases, the consumer was not properly warned of the risks of taking the drug. Hundreds of these cases have been consolidated into federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) in New Jersey.
PPIs are one of the most popular medications worldwide. PPIs have global sales of about $14 billion a year.
